How Namkaran Sanskar is Conducted in Bangalore Homes
According to the Grihya Sutras, a child's name carries the subtle vibration (Nada) that accompanies them throughout life. Traditionally performed on the 11th, 12th, 21st, or 101st day after birth—once the post-birth Sutak period concludes—Namkaran Sanskar purifies the home through Punyahavachanam and Havan while welcoming the newborn into the family's Gotra and lineage.
Before the ceremony, Pt. Rahul Shastri Ji examines the baby's exact birth time, date, and place to determine the Janma Rashi, Janma Nakshatra, and exact Charan (quarter), sharing the auspicious starting letters (Naam Akshar) with the parents so they can select a meaningful name.
During the ritual, after Gauri-Ganesh, Kalash, Matrika, and Navgraha Pujan, the baby's name is written on a plate of sacred rice/haldi with a gold ring or silver pen, whispered gently into the baby's right ear by the father/paternal aunt (Bua Ji) with a conch/betel leaf, and announced joyfully as elders shower flower petals and blessings.
